Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

A neurophysiological listening therapy.

Do you or your child have sensitivity to noises, exhibit inattention or anxiety, struggle to regulate emotions, have sleep difficulties, appear “on edge” in the environment, miss the ‘hidden’ social cues of others, or experience stressors impacting social engagement?

Delivered as a stand-alone service to complement the work a child or adult is already doing (or will be doing in therapy), or woven into your care while at Kids on the POINT, the Safe and Sound Protocol promotes a neural foundation for children, teens, and adults that is beneficial to overall well-being. Let’s learn more!

About SSP

The SSP is an evidence-based music intervention developed and researched for decades by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on the Polyvagal Theory, or “science of feeling safe”. When our nervous system detects and responds to cues of safety, it operates in the social engagement mode. When the nervous system detects danger, it becomes activated or shuts down, moving to a ‘fight-flight’ or ‘freeze’ mode. The goal of the SSP is to build a more resilient nervous system, leading to improved regulation and daily functioning. When the nervous system detects safety, that’s when social engagement becomes spontaneous!

How It Works

The SSP is designed to stimulate the vagus nerve and the neural networks associated with listening, leading to positive changes within the nervous system. Through the listening of a five-hour specially-filtered music playlist, SSP trains the middle ear muscles to tune in to cues of safety signaled by the frequencies of the human voice. When we can move the nervous system out of chronic states of fight, flight, or freeze, it allows us to respond versus react to life’s challenges, become more responsive to our emotional needs, access higher learning and cognition, and build positive social relationships
